What this course covers
The Officer of the Watch (OOW) course is a 23-day programme made up of four MCA modules that cover the academic side of qualifying to stand a bridge watch on your own: Navigation, Radar and ARPA, General Ship Knowledge, HELM (Operational) and PSCRB. It’s designed for experienced deckhands and ratings with qualifying sea service who are ready to move from crew into their first officer role, and you can book the full block back to back or take the modules one at a time as your leave allows.
You’ll work through position fixing, passage planning, tides and pilotage, radar and ARPA collision avoidance, ship construction and stability, bridge leadership and decision-making, and the launching and handling of life-rafts and rescue boats.
On completion you’ll sit an external examination marked by the MCA towards your OOW Yachts 3000gt Certificate of Competency, with the three core modules taught in Simon’s Town and PSCRB in Hout Bay.
