DESCRIPTION:What this course covers\nThe Officer of the Watch (OOW) course is a 23-day programme made up of four MCA modules that cover the academic side of qualifying to stand a bridge watch on your own: Navigation\, Radar and ARPA\, General Ship Knowledge\, HELM (Operational) and PSCRB. It’s designed for experienced deckhands and ratings with qualifying sea service who are ready to move from crew into their first officer role\, and you can book the full block back to back or take the modules one at a time as your leave allows. \nYou’ll work through position fixing\, passage planning\, tides and pilotage\, radar and ARPA collision avoidance\, ship construction and stability\, bridge leadership and decision-making\, and the launching and handling of life-rafts and rescue boats. \nOn completion you’ll sit an external examination marked by the MCA towards your OOW Yachts 3000gt Certificate of Competency\, with the three core modules taught in Simon’s Town and PSCRB in Hout Bay.

It’s designed for anyone starting out in yachting or the wider maritime industry\, whether you’re heading for deck\, interior\, engineering or the galley\, with no previous experience or sea time required. \nYou’ll learn sea survival in the pool and open water\, including launching and righting life-rafts\, fight real fires in a live burn facility\, practise first aid and CPR for injuries that happen at sea\, and cover shipboard safety\, emergency procedures and life on board\, with practical assessment after each module. \nOn completion you’ll receive your STCW Basic Safety certificates\, the first thing crew agencies look for.

DESCRIPTION:What this course covers\nThe Approved Engine Course (AEC 1) is a five-day\, 30-hour course in Simon’s Town that teaches the fundamentals of marine diesel engines and the systems that keep them running\, and it’s the first step on the MCA yacht engineering route. It’s designed for crew with little or no engineering background who want to start working towards a yacht engineer role\, as well as deckhands and small yacht captains who want to be the person on board who can fix a problem when it matters. \nYou’ll learn how diesel engines work and are built\, then get hands-on with fuel systems\, air intake and turbocharging\, cooling and lubrication\, electrical systems\, gearboxes and shafts\, hull fittings\, MARPOL pollution rules\, safe working in machinery spaces and bottled LPG installations\, with practical assessment throughout and a one-hour written exam on the final day. \nOn completion you’ll receive the MCA-approved AEC 1 certificate\, which you need before any engineering sea time will count\, and the natural next step is AEC 2\, also run in Simon’s Town.

DESCRIPTION:What this course covers\nThe Master of Yachts 200gt Limited course is a two-week course\, run in Cape Town and Knysna\, that prepares you to take command of a commercial yacht up to 200 gross tons operating within 150 nautical miles of the coast. It’s designed for experienced crew and skippers ready for their first command ticket\, with at least 3\,000 logged miles\, 50 days aboard and solid twin-screw powerboat handling behind them. \nYou’ll spend the theory week on collision regulations\, meteorology\, tides\, navigation and chartwork\, and business and law\, each with its own exam\, then head out on the water for a practical week covering close-quarters handling\, berthing\, anchoring\, man overboard recovery and emergency procedures under assessment. \nOn completion you’ll receive the IYT Master of Yachts 200gt Limited Certificate of Competency\, MCA approved and assessed by an independent external examiner.
