SUMMARY:PDSD
DESCRIPTION:What this course covers\nThe MCA STCW Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PSDS) course is a one-day course in Hout Bay that gives you the security training required for crew working on board ISPS Code compliant vessels. It’s aimed at anyone who will be given security responsibilities on a yacht or commercial ship\, and it forms part of the training you need on the path to your Officer of the Watch (OOW) certificate. Many yachts now expect all crew to hold it\, so it’s a useful addition to your CV whatever department you work in. \nYou’ll cover the ISPS Code and maritime security levels\, how to recognise security threats including piracy and armed robbery\, how to identify weapons and dangerous substances\, search techniques\, access control and crowd management\, and how security drills and exercises are run on board\, with a short assessment at the end of the day. \nOn completion you’ll receive your STCW PSDS certificate\, which doesn’t need revalidating\, so once you have it you’re covered for the rest of your career.

SUMMARY:STCW Refresher
DESCRIPTION:What this course covers\nThe MCA STCW Refresher is a two-day course in Hout Bay\, Cape Town\, for crew who already hold STCW Basic Safety Training and need to revalidate it. Your Personal Survival Techniques and Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certificates have to be refreshed every five years to keep working on board\, so it’s worth booking well before they run out. \nYou’ll get back in the pool to put on lifejackets and immersion suits\, board and right a life-raft and practise survival techniques in the water\, then move to the live burn facility to tackle real fires with extinguishers\, hoses and breathing apparatus\, with practical assessment throughout. \nOn completion you’ll receive revalidated PST and FPFF certificates\, valid for another five years. Elementary First Aid and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities don’t need refreshing\, so these two are all you need to stay current.

SUMMARY:Yacht Rating - Deckhand module
DESCRIPTION:What this course covers\nThe Yacht Rating (Course Completion Certificate) course is a five-day course in Hout Bay that covers the core deck skills every rating needs and gives you the fastest route to your MCA Yacht Rating. It’s designed for new and aspiring yacht crew\, with no previous experience or sea time required\, and it’s especially useful if you want to be fully certified before a season ends rather than waiting on task book sign-offs. \nYou’ll learn proper lookout and watchkeeping duties\, the location and use of safety equipment\, safe working practices aloft and over the side\, basic engine room watchkeeping\, ropework\, splicing\, mooring and anchoring\, and routine deck maintenance to yacht standard. \nOn completion you’ll receive a course completion certificate that cuts your required sea service from six months to two and removes the need for a task book\, so once you’ve logged two months on board you can apply to the MCA for your Yacht Rating.
