Efficient Deckhand (EDH)
April 26, 2027 @ 8:30 am - April 30, 2027 @ 3:30 pm
What this course covers
The Efficient Deckhand (EDH) course is a five-day course in Simon’s Town that teaches the practical seamanship skills a competent deckhand is expected to have, including ropework, rigging, mooring, anchoring and emergency procedures. It’s designed for working crew with at least six months of sea time who are building towards the MCA Yacht Officer of the Watch 3000gt CoC.
You’ll splice rope and wire, handle heavy mooring lines, practise helm orders and lookout duties, and work through safe deck practices and emergency drills, with written and practical assessments throughout the week.
On completion you’ll receive the MCA Efficient Deckhand certificate, recognised across yachting and commercial shipping, and since it has to be held for 18 months before your OOW CoC can be issued, it’s worth booking as soon as you’re eligible.
