What this course covers

The MCA STCW Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PSDS) course is a one-day course in Hout Bay that gives you the security training required for crew working on board ISPS Code compliant vessels. It’s aimed at anyone who will be given security responsibilities on a yacht or commercial ship, and it forms part of the training you need on the path to your Officer of the Watch (OOW) certificate. Many yachts now expect all crew to hold it, so it’s a useful addition to your CV whatever department you work in.

You’ll cover the ISPS Code and maritime security levels, how to recognise security threats including piracy and armed robbery, how to identify weapons and dangerous substances, search techniques, access control and crowd management, and how security drills and exercises are run on board, with a short assessment at the end of the day.

On completion you’ll receive your STCW PSDS certificate, which doesn’t need revalidating, so once you have it you’re covered for the rest of your career.
