What the Master of Yachts 200gt Unlimited course covers

The Limited ticket stops at 150 miles from the coast. Unlimited removes that line entirely, and the difference between the two comes down to one skill: whether you can find your position without GPS.

That is what this five-day course is for. Celestial navigation, worked with a sextant, tables and arithmetic, to the point where you could take a vessel across an ocean with the satellites switched off and still know where you are.

It is a fair question whether that still matters. GPS works, it has worked for decades, and few masters take a sun sight in anger. The answer is that certification for ocean passages has never accepted a single point of failure. Electronics fail, antennas get damaged, and a vessel 900 miles from land with no position is a serious situation rather than an inconvenience. The regulator requires the master to have a fallback, and celestial is it.

There is a secondary benefit that nobody puts in a syllabus. Learning celestial teaches you what a position fix actually is. Once you have derived one from a sextant angle, a chronometer and a set of tables, the number on a GPS screen stops being a fact you accept and becomes a result you can sanity-check. That habit is the difference between a navigator and someone reading a display.

On completion you are eligible for the Certificate of Competency permitting command of commercial yachts up to 200 gross tons on ocean crossings and passages, with no distance restriction. MCA approved, and requiring no further endorsements for commercial use in the yachting sector.

Master of Yachts 200gt Unlimited Course Content

Five days, largely classroom-based with practical sight-taking. Examined at the end.

Using a sextant

Construction, index error, adjustment and care. Taking a sight properly, bringing a body down to the horizon, and the timing discipline that makes a sight worth working. Practised until the readings are repeatable.

Principles of celestial navigation

The celestial sphere, declination and hour angle, and how a measured altitude becomes a position line. The theory needed to understand what you are calculating rather than following a procedure blindly.

Sight reduction and position fixing

Working a sight through to an intercept and plotting it. Sun-run-sun, meridian passage for latitude, star and planet sights at twilight, and combining position lines into a fix.

Corrections and error sources

Dip, refraction, semi-diameter, parallax and index error. Where an inaccurate fix comes from and how to trace it back.

Great circle sailing

Why the shortest route across an ocean is not a straight line on a Mercator chart. Calculating great circle and composite routes, and the practical limits on sailing one.

Weather routing

Planning a passage around ocean weather systems rather than through them. Seasonal patterns, routeing charts, and the decisions that shorten or lengthen a crossing.

Ocean passage planning

Bringing it together. Planning a crossing end to end, including fuel and water, crew watch systems, contingency ports, communications and what to do when the plan stops working mid-ocean.

Where the Master of Yachts 200gt Unlimited certificate takes you

Unlimited is what opens delivery work and ocean charter. A yacht crossing the Atlantic for the season needs a master certified for it, and Limited holders are not eligible regardless of how capable they are.

It is also the point at which the certificate stops being regional. A 200gt Unlimited holder can be hired anywhere and take the vessel anywhere within the tonnage limit, which changes the shape of the job market available to you.

From here the route continues to Master 500gt/3000gt for larger vessels, which is a substantially bigger undertaking involving separate modules and considerably more sea time.

Prerequisite. You need the 200gt Limited CoC before taking this. If you do not hold it, start there.
