Small Powerboat and RIB Master Course

The IYT certification that lets you take command of a tender, and the reason captains hand you the keys instead of a deck brush.
What the Small Powerboat & RIB Master Course covers
On a superyacht, the tender is the vessel that actually moves. Guests to shore, crew to the marina, provisions from the quay, a line run to a mooring buoy. Someone has to drive it, and that someone needs a ticket.
The IYT RIB Master certificate is that ticket. It authorises you to command a vessel up to 15 metres, outboard-driven with no horsepower limit, operating up to 20 nautical miles from a safe haven. In practice that covers nearly every tender and support boat you will meet in the industry.
It is a standalone qualification with no prerequisites, which makes it one of the fastest routes into paid work on the water. It is equally useful as a first step for someone testing the industry, or as an add-on for crew already aboard who want to stop being a passenger on every tender run.
Rigid inflatables are not forgiving boats to learn on badly. The inflatable collar makes them stable and hard to sink, which also means they will happily let an untrained driver do something expensive at speed. Five days of structured instruction is the difference.
Small Powerboat & RIB Master Course content
The week splits between classroom theory and time on the water, with practical sessions running every day rather than being saved for the end. Assessment is continuous and practical.
Boat handling
Close-quarters manoeuvring, coming alongside, leaving a berth in wind and tide, turning in confined water, and holding station. This is where most of the week goes, because it is where most of the job is.
High-speed handling
Trim, planing, reading the sea state ahead of you, and knowing what the boat will do when it leaves the water. Also when not to go fast, which takes longer to learn than the opposite.
Man overboard and emergency response
Recovery under power, approach angles in swell, and getting a person back aboard a boat with high tubes. Practised repeatedly until it is automatic.
Navigation and passage planning
Chartwork, position fixing, tides, and planning a route within the certificate's 20-mile limit. Enough to run a tender to a marina you have never visited.
Collision regulations
The rules of the road, lights, shapes and sound signals. Not the most enjoyable day of the week, and the one that keeps you out of an incident report.
Ropework, anchoring and mooring
Making fast, picking up a buoy, anchoring and recovering, and the knots you will actually use.
Engine and equipment checks
Pre-departure checks, outboard basics, fuel management, and the safety equipment required aboard and how to use it.
Progression to inboard vessels
Where the opportunity arises during the course, you will spend time on larger inboard-driven vessels with twin controls. Twin-screw handling is a different discipline and an early introduction is useful when you move up to larger tenders and support boats.
Where the Small Powerboat & RIB Master Course certificate takes you
The RIB Master ticket is rarely the only qualification on a CV, but it is often the one that gets a candidate shortlisted. Crew agencies filter on certificates, and a deckhand who can legally drive the tender is more useful from day one than one who cannot.
It is also a qualification that travels. IYT certification is recognised internationally and MCA approved, so it holds up whether you end up in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or working commercially closer to home.
Beyond yachting, RIBs are standard equipment in search and rescue, marine research, dive operations, coastal tourism and commercial support work. The certificate applies in all of them.
